The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is widely applied to graduate studies, including any kind of discipline in engineering. Most engineering schools have adopted the test, as a good GRE score can play a decisive role in securing admission to many competitive programs at top universities in the world. The GRE consists of three units: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing. It is the latter section that makes it relevant for engineering students. High GRE scores can be indicative of the potential to succeed in rigorous graduate-level coursework, making it easier for the applicant to stand out from others. However, the weight placed on GRE scores varies from one program to the next. Thus, prospective students must always look into specific requirements set by specific engineering schools they intend to join.

Minimum GRE Score Requirements for Engineering Programs

Currently, the average GRE score for engineering programs stands at 149.6 for Verbal Reasoning and 159.0 for Quantitative Reasoning. However, ideal scores may vary from university to university. Apart from this, a score of 161–166 in the Quantitative Reasoning section puts you in the average range for the top 100 engineering programs. However, a score in the 160s is a good target. Also, note that the typical score for schools ranking in the top engineering institutions is 76th–90th percentile.

Factors Considered for the GRE Scores for Engineering Programs

  1. Given that engineering programs carry a lot of technical aspects, the score achieved in the quantitative section should also be high.
  2. Obtain an idea of the average GRE score of the engineering programs you will be applying for, so you know what constitutes being competitive.
  3. While GRE scores are important, a good package including experience, GPA, and a statement of purpose can also have a huge impact on your admissions decision.

Admission Requirements for Engineering Programs

Though all universities in the US require you to have a minimum GRE score for an engineering program, the admission requirements will vary from university to university but here is a list of the basic admission requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a science subject with a good CGPA.

  • GMAT scores in place of GRE. However, GMAT and GRE scores for engineering courses may not be required for candidates with good work experience.

  • Academic transcripts.

  • Work experience as per the university requirements.

Preparation Tips for GRE

Here are five GRE preparation tips:
1. Be familiar with test format: GRE consists of three major sections—Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. The types of questions and their time allocations within each section may be a relief when you understand them before you enter the actual test room.

2. Create a Study Schedule: Plan your study time well in advance. Break down your preparation into manageable daily or weekly tasks, focusing on different sections of the test. Consistency is key, so dedicate a set amount of time each day or week to study.

3. Practice with Official Resources: Use ETS official preparation materials, including full-length tests and sample questions. This will be very close to the real test, and you'll get a good idea of the kind of questions you'll face. Take all full-length practice tests under timed conditions for endurance and weakness identification.

4. Practice Quantitative Skills: Since engineering programs rely heavily on quantitative reasoning, practice to solve quantitative problems frequently. Key areas to review include algebra, data interpretation, and a problem-solving strategy. Take advantage of any additional exercises available through websites or prep books.

5. Manage Your Time Better: The GRE is a timed test, so managing your time effectively is important. Practice answering questions within the time limits of each section. For verbal and quantitative sections, try to pace yourself to avoid spending too much time on any one question.
