New Updates for TOEFL Exam 2026
There are some major changes introduced in TOEFL exam for candidates, which are majorly effective from January 2026. It is crucial for international students to understand the updates before appearing for the exam for more clarity. Let us now check some of the major changes in TOEFL iBT exam for test takers:
- Improved TOEFL Home Edition Experience: Effective from May 30, 2025, candidates will have a better and supportive at-home testing experience. The test will involve ETS in-house proctors for consistent support with streamlined registration, including just two clicks to select a test centre or home edition. There will be AI-assisted identity verification for a smooth process.
- Personalised testing experience: Candidates will experience a personalised adaptive structure for reading and listening sections. This change is applicable from January 2026 for testing the use of the English language in real academic settings, such as group discussions and project work. So, the Reading and Listening sections of TOEFL 2026 exam tend to be adaptive, where sectional questions will adjust based on the candidate's answers.
- New Scoring Scale: From January 2026, ETS will provide the TOEFL scoring in a new bandscore scale of 1–6 along with the traditional scoring of 0-120. This new scoring is to align with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This brings TOEFL in line with CEFR levels.
- Better Audio: Effective from January 2026, ETS has upgraded the audio equipment for listening sections in all TOEFL test centres in the world. They will start using the Koss headphones for the listening section of the test
TOEFL Full Form
TOEFL full form is the Test of English as a Foreign Language. It is an international English language testing system. TOEFL 2026 is mainly developed for students from non-English-speaking countries who want to study in English-speaking countries. Types of TOEFL tests

- TOEFL iBT: This is an online version of the TOEFL test 2026 and is the most popular version of TOEFL due to its ease of use and less resource usage. TOEFL iBT test centres are present in major cities of most countries.
- TOEFL iBT Home Edition: This edition is an at-home TOEFL exam given from the comfort of your home. However, the exam is supervised by a human proctor. Make sure to fulfil the exam room requirements for this type of TOEFL exam.
- TOEFL Essential: The TOEFL Essential test will be an at-home exam. The student-friendly test format will include questions on academic and everyday life scenarios. The test will be conducted at home and supervised by an online proctor.
