The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has formally proposed to cap the stay for F-1 and J-1 visas at up to four years, and cut the post-study grace period from 60 days to 30 days.

• For instance, if your programme or research takes five years, you’ll need an extension after four years or risk falling out of status.

• The student visa “interview-waiver” (drop-box) scheme ends on October 1, 2025, meaning many will now have to attend in-person interviews.

• According to NAFSA: Association of International Educators data, F-1 visa issuance is down 12% from January-April 2025 vs the same period in 2024, and as much as 22% in May. For some regions, an 80-90% drop is projected.

• Employers will face the same extra cost, so hiring OPT grads becomes more expensive. This threatens the “bridge to work” pathway for thousands of students, especially from India and China.
